about

the history of colonization of my homeland has been weighing on my conscience a lot lately. reading “Native New Yorkers” brought many details to mind about the Lenape Canarsee and Mespeatches people that lived in this area, how they lived, where they gathered and traded, how they viewed the world. i wrote a land acknowledgement for Ende Tymes following reading this, and tried to take a different approach than the ones i’ve heard from other well-intentioned people/organizations:

“We are on the unceded lands of the Lenape Canarsee and Mespeatches people. The Canarsee have been memorialized in a neighborhood and subway stop in Brooklyn, and the Mespeatches have Maspeth as their namesake. In case you are curious about their histories, please check out “Native New Yorkers” But a historical land acknowledgement isn’t enough.

“In case you are curious to do more - It’s ok to research the peoples that were here before your ancestors drove them out of town. It’s ok to learn about the local ways of living and describing the world, and try to reverse centuries of bad farming, urban design, and profit-driven employment systems. It’s ok to absorb the history of imperialism, learning how the roots of American profiteering lies in the extermination of Native peoples, and the exploitation of African slaves. It’s ok to dig into your individual and cultural financial history, to learn how you and your people have profited off of manifest destiny, land-grabbing, slavery, capitalism, and the prison industry. It’s ok to attempt to make amends by acknowledging this difficult history, learning about reparations and the Land Back movement, and learn how to decolonize your mind, your home, your neighborhood, your community, your people. it's ok to speak up in a public forum and risk embarrassing yourself by being real. It’s more than ok - it’s essential to being a postmodern and progressive human being.

“Noise and art are fun and cool, but it’s hard to avoid the reality that we are the avant-garde of settler colonialism. Lets learn our history - all of it, not just the fun and cool stuff. And lets do something about it.”
